ENERGY-SAVING LAMPS TO REPLACE INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULBS IN DEVELOPING AND EMERGING COUNTRIES
OSRAM is the world’s first lighting manufacturer to receive approval from the United Nations for a “Clean Development Mechanism” (CDM) for reducing CO2 emissions. This sustainable methodology based on the Kyoto Protocol will enable many millions of incandescent light bulbs to be directly replaced by energy-saving lamps over the next few years in developing and emerging countries mainly in Africa and Asia. It will then be possible to trade the CO2 certificates obtained in this way.

BOOK REVIEWS
MARKS OF EXCELLENCE
This book is a great resource for the methods behind some of the most successful logos created. Even if you are not a "logo designer" this book is a good reference. The author goes into the psychology and methods of successful logos. Although sometimes laborious it provides great background.
WAYSHOWING: A GUIDE TO ENVIROMENTAL SIGNAGE PRINCIPLES & PRACTICES
Riffing on the techie term ‘wayfinding’, which designers and manufacturers use when talking about the function of signs and signage systems as they are used by the viewer, this book, by acclaimed graphic designer and author Per Mollerup, seeks to find a more precise visual language for what sign designers actually do, which is to show the way. Unfortunately, as Mollerup points out, many designers never master the art of wayshowing themselves. For wayshowing relates to wayfinding as writing relates to reading and as talking relates to hearing: The purpose of wayshowing is to facilitate wayfinding.
TIPS AND TRICKS
MISUNDERSTOOD CONCEPT
Understanding viewing distance is a concept that has to be taught and examples are about the best way to do so. Viewing distance is by far the most misunderstood concept involved in the printing and sign industries. What most people do not realize is that viewing distance goes hand in hand with the resolution and size of an image (end product).
GET TO YOUR TOP HIT FAST
If you do a search and notice that the file it chose as your Top Hit in the Spotlight menu is actually the file you were looking for (hey, it could happen), just press-and-hold the Command key to jump right to the Top Hit, then press Return to open that document (or song, email, etc.), which closes the Spotlight menu. See, it even tidies up after you. So basically, just press Command-Return to instantly open the Top Hit. Easy enough. www.apple.com/pro/tips/
FINDING THE COMBINED SIZE OF MORE THAN ONE DOCUMENT
Let’s say you have several files on your desktop, and before you copy them all onto your jump drive, you want to find out their combined size. Here’s how it’s done: Select all the files for which you want the combined size, then press Command-Option-I, which brings up the Multiple Item Info dialog, complete with a list of how many files are selected and their combined size.

THE ULTIMATE CUSTOMIZE TOOLBAR SHORTCUT
If you want to customize the items in your toolbar (and there’s nothing wrong with that), just Command-Option-click the little white pill-shaped button at the top right of your window’s title bar, and the Customize Toolbar dialog will appear, right there in your window. Now you can just drag-and-drop icons onto the toolbar.

Holly Myers of LA Weekly wrote about Mark Ryden and his latest art exhibition (shown here, The Tree of Life, which sold for $800,000)."These pictures," [gallery owner Michael] Kohn remarks, "are just extraordinarily well painted. And they're weird enough to be interesting.
ASPARAGUS: A HORTICULTURAL BALLET.
Snip from the Showstudio website, where you can view some very deep and meaningful Quicktime videos of this performance:
The Israeli duo who refer to themselves as the Pil and Galia Kollectiv, in particularly reverential Modernist mood, presented 'Asparagus: A Horticultural Ballet' on stage at the Conway Hall Humanist Centre, in Holborn last week. Well attended, the programme was a three act, asparagus costumed dance that moved methodically through a series of moves for different numbers of the vegetable cast.
