SIGN AFRICA SHOW JOHANNESBURG
The doors to the Johannesburg Sign Africa Show at the Sandton Convention Centre, opened at 10am on Wednesday the 5 September. With many of the exhibitors having worked into the early hours of the morning to get their stands finished in time, there were more than a few tired faces and weary stand minders. When the first few hundred visitors began arriving however, the halls were soon alive with the busy chatter of sales, the hum of large impressive printers and the sharp smell of ink.

Gooi.co.za will be having their pre-launch presentation on the 5th of September at the SignAfrica Show at the Sandton Convention Centre. Gooi.co.za is a one product, one price, and one day website. Every day at exactly 12am a new product will appear on the website, and consumers have either 24 hours to purchase that product that will never be repeated at that price ever again or until the product is sold out. This could happen in a measly 2 hours, or it might not sell out at all. Consumers will never know just exactly how many products are available, so the whole concept of the website is based on impulse buying.
HP BROADENS PRESENCE IN WIDE-FORMAT PRINTING WITH ACQUISITION OF MACDERMID COLORSPAN INC
HP announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire MacDermid ColorSpan Inc., a manufacturer of wide-format digital inkjet printers, from MacDermid Printing Solutions LLC, a subsidiary of privately held MacDermid Incorporated, which is based in Denver.
Based in Minnetonka, Minn., MacDermid ColorSpan is a leading supplier of UV-curable inkjet printers for display graphics and a key supplier to sign shop franchises, quick printers and other small to midsize sign-making and screen-printing businesses.
EPSON AND EFI STRENGTHEN ALLIANCE
Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson") and EFI, the world leader in color digital print servers, superwide format printers and inks and print management solutions, launched a new solution for proofing and large-format production. The third year of the PrintIT! educational campaign designed to attract young people to the world of printing and graphic arts, has kicked off with a 30% increase in the number of student entries over year two, with registrations still rolling in. Over 511 schools have signed up so far, totalling more than 21,000 students, and the closing date for entries is still a number of weeks away.
MID SIGN LAUNCHES DIGITAL REVOLUTION IN MPUMALANGA
Mid Signs in Middelburg, Mpumalanga launched the first true ultra-high resolution flatbed printer and digital cutter, the Mimaki JF6031, in Africa this week. Primedia Unlimited subsidiary, Primall Media took to six busy shopping malls throughout South Africa to promote ABSA’s new TP1 credit card.

Hong Kong – - Throughout July and early August, the Baltic sea was home to one of the most spectacular annual maritime events, the Tall Ships Race. "Japanese toymaker Bandai's Mugen Puchi-Puchi is a handheld electronic gizmo that makes the sound of popping bubblewrap when you press on the plastic bubbles. From Mainichi Daily News:

Puchipuch...Once in every 100 squeezes of an air bubble, instead of emitting a "popping" sound, the noise will be replaced by the sound of a fart or a woman moaning in ecstasy. To avoid any embarrassing situations, Sunday Mainichi notes that Mugen Puchi Puchi's are made to automatically turn off the sound on the train, so people can squeeze their air bubbles in peace knowing that they're not going to produce any unseemly noises.
EXOSKELETON FOR LEGS

In recent experiments, they've demonstrated that the contraption can take 80 percent of the load of an 80 pound backpack. The current prototype apparently screws with your natural walking gait, but they're hoping to tweak the design to enable a normal stride. The research was led by professor Hugh Herr, a double amputee whose pioneering research in the Media Lab's Biomechatronics Group is focused on new prosthetic devices.

"A system launched by the Czechs at the Montreal Expo 1967, touted as the world's first attempt at 'interactive cinema', was recently revived in the Prague theatre where it was first tested. Intriguingly, the Hollywood studios came close to licensing the "Kinoautomat" technology.
