NEW MD TO DRIVE CLARION INTO THE FUTURE
Blake Currie has been appointed managing director at Clarion Printed Products, taking over from Steve Loughton who headed the company for 35 years.

Blake’s appointment follows eight successful years with the company, first as a divisional sales manager, and later as operations manager and most recently, operations director. During his time as sales manager he developed and expanded the Clarion marking systems Texprint product range of heat applied transfers for the clothing and textile manufacturing industry.

HP TO LAUNCH WEB FORUM FOR ALL WIDE FORMAT USERS
HP have launched a new web forum for wide format users. Luis Christophe, HP,s EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) signage manager, HP is looking to expand its market share and this strategy, called Go Large, hopes to create this forum where users can exchange views and offer HP with perspectives and opinions that will be valuable for all parties.

HP will tie in Go Large with its new Print 2.0 strategy.

This will represent valuable market reserach information for HP and will potentially influence HP's products, both software and hardware. The forum will be open to all users of wide format equipment, not just HP users.
BAPC 2007 CONFERENCE GOES CARBONZERO!
The BAPC (British Association for Print and Communications) delighted to announce that this year’s BAPC conference, taking place over the weekend of 2nd November at the Crowne Plaza in Marlow, Bucks, will be officially certified CarbonZero by respected carbon management organization, co2balance.com.
FEDS GIVE GREEN LIGHT TO DIGITAL BILLBOARDS
(Washington, DC) – Digital billboards are not banned by existing federal rules and regulations, and states should continue to develop acceptable guidelines for their use, according to a new memorandum from the Federal Highway Administration. The memo gives states the ability to approve guidelines for new billboard technology without the fear of running afoul of federal standards.
3M SCOTCH BRAND TAPE DECLARED ‘HISTORICAL LANDMARK'
The American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific society, has designated 3M Scotch Brand Tape as an “historical chemical landmark,” citing its ubiquitous use in the modern world and 3M’s innovative role in adhesives technology.

ACS board of directors chair Dr. Judith L. Benham presented a special bronze plaque marking the distinction to Dr. Fred J. Palensky, 3M executive vice president, Research and Development, and chief technology officer, in a ceremony today at 3M Center.
FESPA ANNOUNCES 2008 DIGITAL PRINT AWARDS, SUPPORTED BY HP
FESPA today announces its FESPA Digital Print Awards 2008, with the continued support of HP, a market-leading supplier of wide- and super-wide format printers and consumables. First launched at FESPA Digital 2006 in Amsterdam, the FESPA Digital Print Awards set out to recognise and reward best practice in the digital printing sector, judging entries not simply on their print quality, but on their creativity and the use of digital technology to deliver definable advantages to the client.
CROWDS, SALES UP AT 'SUPERSIZED' GRAPH EXPO 2007
Nearly 70 educational sessions drew a record number of participants, notably the largest registration since 2000, with participants choosing to attend more sessions than in the past, including five sold out sessions. Hailed by exhibitors as "the number one show for us," "extraordinarily successful" and "the best show I can really remember," the four-day GRAPH EXPO held at McCormick Place in Chicago in mid-September was an unprecedented success.
PRINTIT! YEAR THREE PRIZEWINNERS ENJOY “TRIP OF A LIFETIME”
PrintIT! has again allowed students to reap the benefits of their hard work by arranging a prizewinning trip to the Caribbean. More than 16,000 students from 412 schools participated in year two of the scheme, resulting in a winning team from Keswick School in Cumbria. 3M AND AVERY DENNISON SETTLE PATENT INFRINGEMENT LAWSUITS
In a statement released by 3M, both parties have reached a settlement of lawsuits brought by 3M in the United States and the Netherlands for infringement of 3M’s patents directed to release liners used in the manufacture and sale of pressure sensitive adhesives for large format graphics. The lawsuits have been resolved as part of a global settlement between 3M and Avery Dennison of patent disputes involving structured release liners, structured adhesives having air bleed capabilities and structured adhesives having repositionable capabilities.
IN PAPER/GRAPHIC BUSINESS
Antalis South Africa, the largest paper merchant in South Africa and a leader in the graphics industry, has secured a significant BEE partnership through the acquisition by the Impho Consortium of a 20% stake in Antalis South Africa. In a separate transaction a further 5.1% share in Antalis South Africa has been disposed of to The Antalis South Africa Employees Empowerment Trust subject to allocation of units to qualifying staff members in terms of the Trust Deed.

"And the winner is" This sentence was often used on 21st of September during the viscom night, when the viscom INNOVATION AWARD and the Digital Signage Best Practice Award were awarded for the first time. More than 50 submissions made it difficult for the jury to make a decision.

STONEHOUSE GRAPHICS BECOMES SIKHONA INDUSTRIAL MEDIA
Stonehouse Graphics, one of the giants in the large format digital printing industry has changed its name to Sikhona Industrial Media (Pty) Ltd from the beginning of September. The change is part of the company’s transformation and growth drive following a 100% Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) acquisition last year.
FIRST OHMSA AWARDS WINNER NAMED!
Conn Bertish and Annelie van Niekerk of J Walter Thomson drove away with top honours at the inaugural OHMSA Awards 2007, winning the OHMSA trophy and a brand new Ford Fiesta each. The team was selected as overall winner and winner of the internally illuminated billboard category for their client Brandhouse’s J&B Rare Scotch Whisky brand. The OHMSA Awards were held on Thursday 30 August at a gala awards ceremony at Montecasino.

LED APPLICATIONS AND PROJECTS
LED modules, such as strips and chains with their high-power COB light emitting diodes from TridonicAtco have become established in the signage sector. This is because they offer many advantages over alternative light sources, namely neon systems and backlighting with fluorescent lamps, in terms of installation and operation. LED solutions are often more cost-effective. Innovative semiconductor light guarantees saturated colours to give an excellent overall colour appearance so illuminated signage elements present the brand or corporate image clearly and from great distances.

ROLLS-ROYCE INSTALLS DIGITAL SIGNAGE FOR CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS
MediaTile announced the successful deployment of the first facility-wide cellular-based digital signage network for Rolls-Royce Corp. in Indianapolis. The MediaTile all-in-one, cellular digital signage system required no IT resources to ‘network’ two million-square-foot facilities and satellite offices where the signs were deployed.
SHARK ATTACK
When creating graphics for an aquarium, the imagination and physical space present the only limits. Because aquariums expose kids of all ages to exotic creatures of the deep from the world over, the graphics need to be engaging while conveying a sense of the animal’s nature. This summer, Newport (KY) Aquarium officials commissioned MurphyCatton to build an entry sculpture for its shark-tank exhibition, and Walton, KY-based exhibit-fabrication firm eagerly took the challenge.

The Kufstein Operetta Summer Festival was not the only event to premiere this year with Mediatex® Presto by Junkers & Müllers appearing on stage for the first time. The digitally printed fabric was used for the entire stage set of a production of “Die Fledermaus”.

This translucent, embossed vinyl features an acrylic/solvent-based permanent adhesive with a moderately aggressive tack that allows for repositioning, but can be removed without leaving residue or damaging the glass surface.

HOW TO MAKE A GLOWING PUNK CUPCAKE
Under the heading of yet more food I'd love to eat but probably shouldn't, I give you this HOW TO for making glowing punk cupcakes.

I gave the Dracula Punk Monster two large eyes and I used the sponge wedge that I had cut out to make a Punk hair style. It was secured with icing and black spikes added. I used writing icing to add detail to the Halloween cupcake. A green jelly bean made a great tongue. It will now glow in the dark in a black spooky room. Kids can use the fangs after enjoying eating the cake.
