A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT
Local Go Karters, Myk Prescott of Ruimsig and Beverley Gardner of Weltevreden Park have attempted two new Guinness World Records. Myk contacted Guinness about breaking an existing 24 hours Go Karting record. Guinness asked if he would not be interested in attempting an individual record, as the team record already existed. Myk jumped at the chance and awaited further instruction and rules from Guinness.

ROLAND WRAP TO THE MAX DELIVER FIRST EDUCATIONAL ART PRIZE
First place winners of the Wrap to the Max Educational Art Prize, Riana Botha and Simone Snoek from J D Botha Signs, recently visited the Frances Vorwerg school for Cerebral Palsied Children in Johannesburg, to hand over their prize of a fully equipped twelve station computer design studio valued at R200 000.

QUALITY LINE-UP AT PRINTING EXCELLENCE IN 2010
Printing Excellence in 2010, a joint initiative between solutions-driven global company 3M and THINK (the South African Communication Design Council), is the first in a series of workshops to be held from now until 2010.

DEBATE ON SA GOVERNMENT’S ANNOUNCED BAN ON ALCOHOL ADVERTISING
The South African Government has without prior warning published its first ban on alcohol advertising. In the Government gazette of 3 November 2008 it has published an amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations proposing the ban of any alcohol advertising visible from any public road.

COMUTANET TURBO BOOSTS THE SUNLIGHT BRAND
Trusted Unilever brand, Sunlight called on ComutaNet to launch its line extension, Sunlight Turbo, taking advantage of the company’s reach of over 20 million commuters. 50 Quantum mini buses are sporting full branding for the six month campaign period between September 2008 and February 2009.    

DISCOVERY VITALITY DIAMOND STATUS TREADMILLS IN PLANET FITNESS
Discovery Vitality members received VIP treatment in the most unlikely of places courtesy of Unlimited subsidiary TLC, the treadmills at Planet Fitness. The members’ regular exercise routines were given a very noticeable make over, as hundreds of treadmills at 14 Planet Fitness gyms around Cape Town and Johannesburg were transformed.

TELKOM TAKES TO THE STREETS WITH COMUTANET
Running until March 2009, Telkom has branded 250 full bus backs to promote its ‘Waya-Waya’ service, allowing users to cost effectively stay in touch with friends and family leading up to Christmas and into the new year. 

L.A. BILLBOARD GROWS BEARD
On the busy corner of Hollywood and Highland Centre in Los Angeles, the unique Diet Mountain Dew’s billboard, centred on the product’s ‘Surprising Facts’ TV campaign, depicts a man whose beard keeps growing. The board shows a man and a woman in an office setup, with the words, ‘Attraction makes beards grow faster.’  

A WRAP WITH A SWEET TOOTH
Picture yourself sitting in morning rush-hour traffic, and this SUV rolls up alongside you. Crullers, long johns, Bavarian-cream-filled pastries and other deep-fried delectables are liable to leave motorists drooling on their steering wheels or, in extreme cases of low blood sugar, spur them to step out of their cars to take a bite. A disclaimer, such as ‘Warning: This vehicle is decorated with vinyl, not a sugary glaze,’ might be in order.

BRANDORTAL AND SONY PRODUCE REMARKABLE DIGITAL DISPLAY
During the Confederation cup draw at the Sandton Convention Centre on Saturday evening, 22 November 2008, Brandportal, with various other partners, displayed the Ziris Canvas signage solution in the form of an impressive Soccer ball. The unique display illustrated the superior capabilities of the Sony Ziris platform combined with the processing power of the Playstation 3 processor.

NEARLY HALF OF ALL DIGITAL DISPLAYS TO LEVERAGE SMS BY 2012
The promise of interactivity between potential customers and display technology is only at its beginning; however, advertisers are looking to enable a higher level of engagement with digital signage audiences by enabling a backchannel.  

WALGREEN’S 17-STORY DIGITAL BILLBOARD AT ONE TIMES SQUARE
Walgreen’s hosted the official lighting of the ‘Spectacular’ outdoor digital billboard at One Times Square on Thursday 20 November. Conceived and designed by branding and design firm Gilmore Group, and constructed by D3, Walgreens’ One Time Square sign wraps three sides of the landmark and stretches 17 stories (65m or 212ft high) in a continuous display of video and animation produced by 12 million LEDs and numerous giant plasma video screens.
