ANOTHER NAIL ON ALCOHOL ADVERTISING IS PROPOSED 
The Cape Times, in an article published on 16 March 2009, reported that a draft bylaw on alcohol and substance abuse proposes the formation of an action committee of experts, people in business, government representatives, and others to help combat drug and alcohol abuse. It also proposes conditions that would tighten the running of businesses and entertainment venues that sell alcohol and prohibit tenants of council-owned properties from using these as drug dens or shebeens report the Cape Times. 

ALLEN GLEN STUDENTS COMPLETE FIRST VINYL COURSE
On the success of their home-based signage business, CBL Studios, owners Harry Breytenbach and his daughter Linda have put their skills to further use by educating students at Allen Glen High School in Johannesburg, on signage design and various vinyl applications. Assisted by Avery’s Liezle Barrie, the students have completed a comprehensive eight-week course, with materials sponsored by Avery Graphics.  

JUMPING ON THE 2010 BRAND-WAGON? THINK AGAIN…
The 2010 soccer world cup is going to bring a wealth of opportunity to local businesses but there are strict rules and regulations in place protecting the official FIFA marks. Before embarking on a brand campaign for the 2010 event, make sure you are aware of what you can and cannot use, as the official logos and even specific words, will be fiercely guarded. PAPER VERSUS PLASTIC POSTERS: PROS AND CONS
Have you heard of the phenomenon of plastic posters? If you have not, then now you know there is such a thing. Besides the usual glossy full colour posters, poster printing companies now offer plastic posters. It is actually a natural evolution for poster printing. 

RECORD ATTENDANCE AT SIGN AFRICA DURBAN 2009
Attendance at the recent Sign Africa Durban exhibition, held at the city’s International Convention Centre from 25 to 26 March, exceeded all expectations with a record 892 visitors. Exhibitors on the show, collectively representing hundreds of brands, were inundated with interest and came away with lists of leads. Many made impressive sales, proving that Kwa-Zulu Natal businesses have remained resilient and still have much to offer the local industry. 

SIGN CHINA A HUGE SUCCESS SAY ORGANISERS
The Sign China 2009 was a huge success, say Trust Exhibitions, the organisers. With 806 exhibitors and more than 46,000 local and foreign visitors the 4 day exhibition. Visitors came from Spain, Vietnam, Turkey, Korea, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Russia, Ukraine, South Africa, Australia, India, and Taiwan as well as many other countries. The show will be held again from March 2nd to March 5th, 2010.  

FIRST EVER FESPA DIGITAL INDIA SHOW PROVES STRONG SUCCESS
FESPA’s first Digital India Show which took place from 28th February to 2nd March 2009 in Mumbai at the Bombay Exhibition Centre (BEC) attracted nearly 3000 visitors. The show audience was primarily from India, though printers from Europe, North America, the Middle East and other Asian countries, including Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka also attended the show.

GOVERNMENT SET TO MAKE OUTDOOR ADVERTISING COMPULSORY IN ANY ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN
’We see outdoor advertising as a growth engine for small and medium seized businesses and are introducing legislation to make the use of outdoor advertising compulsory in any media campaign as well as other community based media such as community radio,’ says Lumko Mtimbe CEO of the Media Development & Diversity Agency.

The last quarter of 2008 saw Campus Media’s Interactive Division spreading its wings in terms of the variety and the levels of complexity of campus promotions. Big brands like BIC, MTN, Levi’s ® and Mountain Dew tapped Campus Media to successfully penetrate the student market.
