BEST EVER SIGN AFRICA JHB 2009
5013 people visited the Sign Africa show at the Sandton Convention Centre last week (included in this number is 401 students). This year was the biggest Sign Africa yet with 3787 square metres of exhibition space represented by 108 exhibitors. In 2008 there were 4400 visitors and 3550 square metres of exhibitor space. Visitors enjoyed the demonstrations on the stands, the launch of new products, the Avery Roland Vehicle Wrap Training area and the informative slots at the Practical Sign and Digital Graphics conference area.

FESPA: RESULTS OF FESPA´S FIRST STAKEHOLDER ECONOMY SURVEY
The results of FESPA’s first stakeholder Economy Survey suggest that wide format printers and their suppliers worldwide are broadly optimistic about the chances of business recovering to pre-recession levels within the next 12 months.

INDIZA MEDIA AND EKURHULENI 'DRIVE' SERVICE DELIVERY  
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has inked Indiza Media, a subsidiary of Primedia Outdoor, to secure the advertising rights for OR Tambo International Airport's (ORTIA) airport buses. Indiza contracted the media rights from ORTIA by tender in October 2008. Ekurhuleni's purchases constitute invaluable branding opportunities on the eight airport buses used to ferry passengers between the airport's various car parks and the terminal buildings. 

SAMSUNG AND PRIMALL DRIVE MILLIONS OF SHOPPERS TO LED TV ACTIVATION
To boost awareness of the centre court activation for its new range of LED TV’s, Samsung has signed a one month deal with mall advertising specialists and Primedia Unlimited subsidiary, Primall Media. Maximum impact will be delivered for Samsung through a double story banner and branded escalators in Sandton City. 

PRIMEDIA UNLIMITED CONTRACTED FOR ICC CHAMPIONS TROPHY SOUTH AFRICA 2009
Cricket fever is about to reach an all time high as the ICC Champions Trophy prepares to get underway on the 22nd September. To ensure maximum awareness of the much anticipated event, the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) campaign agency for Champions Trophy South Africa 2009, has contracted out of home experts Primedia Unlimited for a portion of its advertising spend to inform, remind and entice cricket lovers to book their seats.

APPLE RELEASES MAC OS X SNOW LEOPARD
Apple has announced that Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard is now on sale at Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorised Resellers, and that Apple’s online store is now accepting pre-orders. Snow Leopard builds on a decade of OS X innovation and success with hundreds of refinements, new core technologies and out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange.  

NEW OUTDOOR BACKLIT FILM AND SUPERDRY LIGHT BOX FILM FROM SIHL
Sihl 3181 outdoor backlit film and Sihl 3461 superdry light box film are two new films for aqueous printers. 3181 is a front print outdoor backlit film that produces brilliant images with both dye and pigment aqueous based inks. When printed with pigment ink, prints are long lasting, can be displayed indoors or outdoors and remain brilliant. Main applications include; outdoor signage, exhibit displays, trade show graphics, subway advertising, bus stop graphics and any application that may be exposed to the elements.  

HTM SYSTEM CURVED GLASS SIGNAGE
HTM System is introducing the Ocean System curved-glass signage in various sizes. The curved or flat-front surfaces add extra design elements to customers’ locations. Graphics can be easily inserted between the clear glasses and tightened. Suitable for offices, conference rooms, hotels, clubs and other public areas, the graphics can be frequently changes.  

ROSE DISPLAYS LIBRARY OF WHITE PAPERS FOR IN-STORE DISPLAY SIGNAGE
Rose Displays, Ltd. has developed a library of white papers focused on Best Practices in the creative, logistical, and technical aspects of in-store signage display. Available for free download the white papers are designed to help visual display professionals maximise the effectiveness and return on investment of their in-store marketing programmes.  

SIHL INTRODUCES NEW DISPLAY FILMS
Sihl has announced four new inkjet display films for tradeshow graphic applications, rollup banners, point of purchase displays and retail advertising. Sihl SuperDryTM Rollup Film with Blockout - 3172 (10mil). Sihl 3172 is a 10 mil, co-extruded, white, polyester film with a 100% light-block layer on the reverse side to eliminate image washout caused by light diffusion.  

DYNASCAN OUTDOOR CYLINDRICAL LED VIDEO DISPLAY
Dynascan Technology Inc. is adding the DS1016 model to its outdoor series of 360° cylindrical LED video displays. The DS1016, which boasts a display area of more than 5sqm (50sq.ft) and a luminance of 8,000 cd/sq. metre, is designed for applications along city streets, outdoor plazas, movie theatres, stadiums, transportation centres and other high traffic public venues. The display, which is rated IP65 weatherproof, can reportedly withstand harsh outdoor conditions. With an integrated heating and air-conditioning system, the screen may be operated year-round in hot and cool climates.  

NEW PRODUCTS FROM POLYCOMP
Following the recent road construction, widening of roads, etc., PolyComp has developed a LED mobile trailer display for use in areas where road construction is taking place. The trailer is based on internationally accepted formats indicating ten characters per line, three lines of characters with a height of characters at approximately 500mm, visible up to 250m away, during the day.  

INTELICOAT TECHNOLOGIES ADDS SATIN BACKLIT FILM TO ITS MAGIC MEDIA LINE
InteliCoat Technologies has announced the expansion of the Magic media line with the introduction of Magic GBL-9, a 9.0 mil, semi-opaque, one-side satin polyester backlit film. For use in both solvent and eco-solvent printing systems, Magic GBL-9 is recommended as a front printing and viewing film where high density can be achieved.

NEW LITEFAST 360° DIGITAL SIGNAGE DISPLAY PRESENTS PORTRAIT IMAGES
The German manufacturer Kinoton GmbH has added a new model to the large range of Litefast 360° Displays. The new Litefast MOTION 100 SL 360° LED video display is designed especially for graphics, stills and videos in portrait format. This makes Litefast MOTION 100 SL perfect for presenting lists of information, such as stock exchange or currency rates, flight information, timetables or agendas.  

NOMINEES CHOSEN FOR DIGITAL SIGNAGE BEST PRACTICE AWARD WINNERS WILL BE AWARDED THEIR PRIZES AT VISCOM NIGHT
They are not winners yet, but they have completed the important first stage: a total of 15 nominees in five categories and another four contestants for the special jury award may hope to make it to the winner's podium when this year's "Digital Signage Best Practice Award" will be presented on 2 October.  

TWO PERSPECTIVES ON THE STATE OF THE DIGITAL SIGNAGE MARKET
Chris Connery, vice president of DisplaySearch, kicked off the DisplaySearch Digital Signage Conference last week with an analytical look at how digital signage fits into an $80 billion global display market. He revealed that there are two perspectives about digital signage in the market’s eyes: While numbers indicate that shipments of 26+ inch displays are continuing to grow, the sector still represents a small portion of the display market overall.

VISTA SYSTEM'S ILLUMINATED SIGNS INSTALLED AT PETER ALAN HEAD OFFICE IN WALES
Vista System International recently supplied its eye catching and flexible Illuminated Signs to ‘Morgan Signs’ for installation at Peter Alan Head Office, Cardiff, Wales, one of the best known estate agents in south Wales. The client was looking for a flexible, affordable and attractively designed sign system.

Coffee-Fueled Truck
A 1975 GMC pickup modified to run on spent coffee grounds proves that any biomass can be used for gasification. This truck hack, called the Café Racer, is powered by pyrolysis gas created by heating steel pipes full of coffee grounds in a wood gas generator. The Café Racer is said by its creators to be carbon-negative, but that hasn’t been substantiated. Still, this kind of technology could play a major role in finding alternatives to fossil fuels in the future.  

High-Tech Cutting Board
This high-tech cutting board -- created by Jess Griffin and Jim Termeer -- makes cooking easier by including an "integrated scale embedded within an clearly defined surface area" that shows the weight of your ingredients. Unfortunately, there's no word yet on if this concept will go into production.
