LAUNCH OF VISCOM AFRICA
Practical Publishing, publishers of Signal and organisers of the internationally respected Sign Africa and Africa In-Store events, have launched an exciting new visual concept for Sign Africa, the Africa In-Store event and the bi-weekly online Signal newsletter. Viscom Africa will take over from the Signal newsletter and the annual Africa In-Store show, coinciding with Sign Africa Johannesburg 2010 but forming a separate entity for the industry end-users. Viscom Africa is the show, newsletter and website for Visual Communications for the end user of all things signage. 

3M BRAND CONFERENCE 2009
3M South Africa organised an interesting line-up of speakers at the 3M Branding Seminar on 24 November 2009 who gave insight into finding innovative ways to execute your branding in the best possible way, without incurring unnecessary legal or financial problems. Speakers on the day included industry experts from various backgrounds who all added insight into your branding year ahead. The line-up included World Cup 2010 brand ambassador Doc Khumalo, speakers from Adams & Adams on the legal issues, 3M's international operations, Mega Coatings, Graffiti on vehicle wraps, John Panton from Digital Distributors and Rob Franco from GSW on digital printing.  

HP ANNOUNCES THE WINNERS OF THE 2009 INNOVATION IN EDUCATION GRANT INITIATIVE IN SOUTH AFRICA
HP South Africa has announced the 2009 winners of the Innovation in Education Grant Initiative, which rewards secondary schools and universities for their revolutionary teaching and learning projects. This year’s winners include six academic institutions from across South Africa out of 50 winners across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and 150 winners world-wide.  

WRAP2THEMAX WINNING ENTRY FOR OCTOBER 2009
The winner of the October 2009 round of the Wrap2theMax vehicle wrap design competition is local designer Annemarie Burger. She wins this round based on her submission for News Cafe that accurately captured the feel of the News Cafe advertising campaigns in a mobile format.   

GLASSPRINT 2009 – RECOGNISING THE IMPORTANCE OF DIGITAL PRINTING ON GLASS
In addition to covering traditional methods of decorating all types of glass, GlassPrint will recognise the recent advances in digital printing technologies on glass that offer many new opportunities for the glass industry. Digital printing techniques can now offer fast and cost-efficient printing on glass and offer real competition to traditional printing techniques such as screenprinting.  

FIFA, SA MEDIA IN STANDOFF
Johannesburg - Football governing body FIFA and South African media are locked in a standoff over restrictive terms and conditions imposed by FIFA on journalists and their publications, Business Day reported on Wednesday.   

ANTALIS 2009 – THE YEAR THAT WAS
During the 1960’s the BBC featured a very young David Frost in a program “The Week That Was”. If you happen to remember it, then you are both beyond middle aged and probably British. The program was a satirical review of the preceding week and was designed to make you think, question, and most of all, laugh. Names such as Monty Python and Two Ronnies, amongst others, were frequently part of the weekly line-up.

JOIN PIERLUIGI COLLINA FOR THE NEW MAGNO PROMOTION!
Antalis South Africa has launched an exciting Magno promotion, featuring world-renowned soccer referee, Pierluigi Collina. The incentive will give printers the opportunity to win one of 10 tickets to the World Cup Soccer semi final game, to be held in Durban on the 7th July 2010. CAPE TOWN SIGNAGE MASTERPLAN – A SLAP IN THE FACE OF THE INDUSTRY  
Cape Town 2010 host city decoration and signage masterplan is revealed and to put it frankly it is a slap in the face of the outdoor industry as a whole. This must be seen against a backdrop of a city that has the most oppressive by-laws in the country and one that has steadfastly refused to consider the inputs of the outdoor industry. 

NELSON MANDELA DRAFT BY-LAW PUBLISHED FOR COMMENTS
The Nelson Mandela has published their draft by-laws for comments. OHMSA has requested all members to submit comments on or before 28 November 2009 to OHMSA. 

WIDEOPEN PLATFORM MAKE SMILES BEAUTIFUL WITH DENTYNE
For the first time ever, Cadbury has elected to utilise large format outdoor advertising choosing Primedia Unlimited subsidiary Wideopen Platform as its ally. The Cadbury mission is to create big brand presence for its chewing gum product, Dentyne.  

PRIMEDIA OUTDOOR DRIVES MCDONALDS' SALES
In its drive to generate awareness around McDonalds' exciting new launches in 2009, and drive sales, McDonalds selected Primedia Outdoor, wholly South African owned Outdoor advertising specialist, to leverage prime-located bus shelter media platforms and drive the promotion. 

L’OREAL ENTRUSTS PRIMALL MEDIA TO PROMOTE EXCELL 10  
The world's largest HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmetics"cosmetics and HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beauty"beauty company, L’Oreal, has again entrusted its shopping centre advertising budget to Primall Media, the mall advertising specialists. The cosmetic giant is currently running a national four-month campaign in Sandton City, Gateway, East Rand Mall, Cavendish and Menlyn using a dominated approach for its Excell 10 permanent hair colour. 

PRIMEDIA LIFESTYLE RANKED SA’S NUMBER ONE SHOPPING CENTRE MARKETING CONSULTANCY
Primedia Unlimited subsidiary Primedia Lifestyle was ranked the number one shopping centre marketing consultancy at the 2009 Annual South African Council of Shopping Centres’ Special Star Awards (SACSC).

Zappa Sambuca is set to fire students’ souls, with its eight-month, bright and colourful Zappa Shooter Extravaganza advertising campaign, strategically located on Primedia Unlimited’s TLC campus washroom advertising media.

Sappi Fine Paper has embarked on a campaign using alternative media to promote the use of paper. They have designed street pole ads to create awareness around the Sappi brand and to encourage commitment to the use of paper as a sustainable communications medium. With this campaign the consumer is enticed to think not only about paper, but also its origin and the choices available to them. It increases visibility and places the Sappi brand at the top of mind.

PROVANTAGE MEDIA LAUNCHES ICONIC OUTDOOR SITE
Provantage Media has launched an innovative and unique outdoor advertising concept by branding 34 consecutive concrete pillars on one of the busiest highways in Johannesburg - the M1 undercarriage.

ROLAND OFFERS WORLD'S FIRST METALLIC INKJET CAPABILITY
Opening up a wealth of opportunities for display producers, label and packaging specialists and sign-makers, Roland DG (UK) Ltd has launched its innovative SOLJET PRO III XC-540MT wide-format inkjet printer which features, for the first time, a metallic ink capability.

Sihl has launched three new 'eco-friendlier' multi-purpose poster papers into the large-format market. The 'wet-strength' Post-2-Cure Papers have been specially developed by Sihl for use with latest generation latex inks from HP and are suited for both indoor and outdoor use.  

SIGNAGE PROVIDER LAUNCHES NEW LINE FOR ENERGY SAVING
Schult, a provider of décor signage, menu systems, and displays that specialises in end-to-end digital integration services, announced the launch of a new line of energy-saving poster cases, signs, menu systems, and displays under the smartbrite brand.  

DRYTAC INTRODUCES RECYCLABLE BLOCKOUT BANNER MATERIAL
Drytac has added a recyclable blockout banner material, for UV flatbed printers to its line of print media. Made of low-density polyethylene (LDPE), EarthSmart Eclipse can be recycled in commercial plastics recycling programmes to become raw material for products like trash bags and landscape fabric. It is also certified by ASTM International (ASTM) to biodegrade in most landfills.

HP ANNOUNCES HP TOUCHSMART SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
HP has announced the HP TouchSmart software development programmes that allow software developers to create consumer and commercial applications for HP TouchSmart PCs and touch-enabled digital signage displays. The programmes are designed to significantly increase the utility of TouchSmart products for consumers and businesses.

OLED PROJECT FOCUSES ON LIGHTING, SIGNAGE
A research project in Germany is intended to bring OLED-based large-area displays lighting applications closer to commercialisation. The project focuses on materials, with longevity and efficiency being the central aspects.

VISTA SYSTEM CUSTOMISED APPLICATION FOR AN ILLUMINATED CAR TOP SIGN
Vista System International has created a new car top sign prototype based on Vista’s VistaLight sign system. This custom adaptation of a standard VistaLight sign was retrofitted to the Truck’s roof-rack with custom made parts designed by Vista. This project demonstrates the true versatility of MCFT (Modular Curved Frame Technology) and Vista System.

LONDON’S OLYMPIC COUNTDOWN BEGINS WITH A BIG BANG (AND LEDS)
BT, a global-communications-services company, has installed a supersized electronic information screen at the top of the iconic BT Tower in London. The 360° LED screen comprises 177 Martin Professional LC Plus Series LED panels. The 529,750 LEDs are encased in vertical tubes, with spaces between them.

Moving Kitchen: Portable Kitchen for Indoor and Outdoor
The Moving Kitchen concept has been designed to move anywhere, even in a tiny sized kitchen, and allows easy cooking as well as eating outside the house. There are many hidden functions of the product that will surely amaze the users, and the same time will prove very much functional. Under the tabletop dish, an induction has been placed that is meant to be used for cooking. There are folded tables on both side of the moving kitchen on which users can put dishes and other ingredients of cooking.
