VISCOM AFRICA 2010 – THE SHOW FOR VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS Viscom Africa is the show for Visual Communications for the end user of all things signage. A dedicated exhibition for the end users, will take place from 8 - 10 September 2010 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
SIGN + DIGITAL GRAPHICS ROADSHOW KICKS OFF IN DURBAN ON 4 FEBRUARY 2010 Practical Publishing launched a significant line-up of events for 2010 including the Sign + Digital Graphics Roadshow which kicks off in Durban for a one-day event on 4 February 2009 at the International Convention Centre in Durban from 9am – 6pm in Hall 2 C,D,E. WRAP2THEMAX WINNING ENTRY FOR DECEMBER 2009 In a month that would be traditionally very slow for any websites, the web based wrap2theMax vehicle wrap design competition saw a dozen high quality entries roll in. The winner of the December round is local designer Norman Calmeyer from CarWraps.co.za.
THE NEW GSW FASHION AND TEXTILE DIVISION AND TRAINING ACADEMY IS LAUNCHED FOR 2010 OPPORTUNITIES Graphix Supply World, Africa’s leading one-stop supplier to the sign, digital printing, textile and graphics related industries officially launched new GSW Textile division last December at an Open House Event, at the GSW. At the exclusive 2-day event, new products were on display and demonstrated, with overseas representatives giving tutorials and presentations.
NEW ONLINE DIRECTORY HELPS AGENCIES AND MARKETERS FIND A DIGITAL PRINT SERVICE PROVIDER HP launched the PSP Network, an on-line service that enables print buyers to find local print service providers (PSPs) to produce applications from business cards, professional photobooks, POP/POS displays, exhibition signage, vehicle graphics, billboards, labels, flexible packaging and more.

EXHIBITORS AND SPONSORS FLOCK TO FESPA 2010 AS MARKET-LEADING GLOBAL IMAGING EVENT Exhibitor bookings for FESPA 2010 (22 – 26 June, Messe Munich), FESPA’s flagship global event for screen, digital and textile printing, continue to build momentum with 25,000 square metres of exhibition space already contracted. More than eight months before the show, over three quarters of the total exhibition area is now committed.
MADICO LAUNCHES NEW LOOK WEBSITE FOCUSSED ON GLAZING ENHANCEMENT FILMS UK-based, Madico Graphic Films has re-launched the dedicated on-line portal for its growing range of environmentally-friendly, UV and eco-solvent inkjet, and thermal transfer printable window films. The new look website – www.glazingenhancement.com – has been completely overhauled to focus on the broad and innovative applications achievable with Madico’s portfolio, including: branding and advertising, interior and retail design, privacy and manifestation, and safety.
LOMOX TO BRING OLED DISPLAYS TO MARKET IN 2012 The Carbon Trust, a United Kingdom-based nonprofit set up by the British government, has awarded $720,000 to fund new lighting technology that could lower your power bill and carbon footprint in the next few years. The money is going to a company called Lomox, to seed further development of organic LED technology. OLEDs use about half the power of fluorescents for a given light output, or about 1/9th the power of a traditional light bulb.
JOBURG INTRODUCE NEW BY-LAWS – GONE ARE THE 10 YEAR APPROVALS Joburg published new by-laws on 18 December 2009 and have shocked the industry by revoking the 10 year approval period. Although they have amended certain contentious provisions the bulk of hardship created by the 2008 by-laws are still there.
FIFA – EVERY GAME HAS ITS RULES With the recent spate of marketers, agencies and media owners receiving a firm rap over the knuckles from FIFA, OHMSA (Out of Home Media South Africa) has found it necessary to remind the industry and marketers of the marketing and advertising guidelines related to the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa.
THE OHMSA AWARDS 2009 Now in its third year, OHMSA is calling for creative entries in the 2009 OHMSA Awards. Aimed at awarding local creative talent, the OHMSA awards seeks to promote an appreciation of excellence in outdoor advertising. The medium itself has grown year on year, with a plethora of creative work which is highly visible and truly deserves the recognition that an OHMSA Award gives.
BEAUTIFUL STREETS IN JOBURG FOCUS ON WELCOMING TOURISTS IN 2010 Street beautification sites selected for upgrade ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup are aimed at presenting the best face of Joburg to tourists visiting our City next year.
FNB KICKED OFF THEIR WORLD CUP 2010 CAMPAIGN In December last year FNB kicked off the World Cup campaign by utilising full wrap bus branding on Tractor Transits/CK Outdoor Golden Arrow bus fleet. All 10 buses were wrapped in time for the December the 4th draw and will be emblazoned with FNB’s World Cup creative until the end of the tournament in July 2010.

TLC TASKED TO ASSIST SAB DELIVER ITS ‘REALITY CHECK’ MESSAGE South African Breweries has contracted Primedia Unlimited subsidiary TLC to promote its ’reality check’ alcohol awareness campaign until March 2010. TLC will flight the campaign across its washroom network in Style and Sports Bars and in TLC’s brand new Soweto Nightlife and Outlying Sport Bar holdings. The partnership will ensure that SAB dominates 370 venues countrywide for the campaign duration.
TLC AND L’OREAL CAPTIVATE LADIES IN CHANGE ROOMS Primedia Unlimited subsidiary TLC has for the first time been awarded an advertising contract to drive sales for L’Oreal / Soft Sheen Carson’s anti-perspirant deodorant, Sadie. The brand will focus exclusively in TLC’s fashion fitting room holding for October within Jet and within Ackerman’s for February, March and April.
TLC AND VODACOM INSURANCE MAKE CONSUMERS LOOK TWICE To promote its phone insurance product, cellular provider Vodacom has returned to Primedia Unlimited subsidiary TLC for a unique washroom advertising campaign. The promotion aims to communicate the necessity of having cell phone insurance based on how easy it is to misplace a phone, and the subsequent costs involved in replacing it.
CORICRAFT AND PRIMALL MEDIA - EXCEPTIONAL VALUE FOR MONEY November saw the Coricraft store located at The Glen Shopping Centre enjoy top-of-mind status among value shoppers and home owners, thanks to Primedia Unlimited subsidiary Primall Media’s captivating mall media platforms.
PERNOD RICARD EXTENDS TLC PARTNERSHIP FOR HAVANA CLUB Determined to keep its communication strategy and brand exposure fresh and evolving, TLC’s long-standing client Pernod Ricard has extended its Mirror Media advertising contract with the Primedia Unlimited subsidiary. The renewed space will be used over the 2009 festive season and early 2010 for Pernod’s Imported Cuban Rum brand Havana Club.
OHMSA AWARDS SUBMISSION DATE EXTENDED
Due to the overwhelming response from Media Owners and creative agencies, the OHMSA Awards organising committee has decided to extend the submission date for entries to18 January 2010.

MEDIATILE AND PARTNERS LATEST TO TAKE A CRACK AT TWO WAY VIDEO CONFERENCING ON THE RETAIL FLOOR The hyperbole about this is about as over-torqued as could be imagined, but overlooking that a prototype being shown off this week at CES by MediaTile and Alcatel/Lucent is nonetheless interesting. The companies have partnered to demo an interactive station that lets shoppers talk through remote video conference with product experts who, presumably, work for the vendor.
DATA CALL INTRODUCES LIVE TRAFFIC TO THE DIGITAL SIGNAGE INDUSTRY Data Call Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: DCLT) today announced that it entered into an agreement with the leading global provider of digital map, traffic and location data. This bike is like no other bike that you have seen, thatís because once you fill the tank with water and start to pedal it will purify the water. This might be a weird gadget, but it is a great invention for the developing world.
Here is a security gadget with a few twists, literally. The Defendius Door Chain at first glance looks like some kind of puzzle game, which attaches to your door and the door will only open once the maze has been completed. OK, this sounds good for those wanting to gain unauthorized access but what about trying to get out, and having to complete the puzzle each time? I'd rather not have to waste time figuring out a puzzle if my home was on fire and I was attempting to escape as quickly as possible.
