VISCOM AFRICA 2010 – THE SHOW FOR VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS Viscom Africa will provide the ideal platform to discuss ideas with a range of industry specialist and to be inspired by specific solutions provided by the stellar line-up of exhibitors. This is an opportunity not to be missed, particularly if your responsibilities include increasing in-store sales, creating a striking store-front or effectively promoting and marketing a brand through the creation of distinctive visual communication.
SIGN & DIGITAL GRAPHICS ROADSHOW RECEIVES PHENOMENAL RESPONSE IN DURBAN The first leg of the Sign & Digital Graphics Roadshow seemed to create an unusual sense of urgency in leisurely Durban, as visitors from across the KZN province descended on the city’s International Convention Centre in droves. The one-day event, which took place on Thursday, 4 February, ended with a final visitor count of 825, keeping the 20 exhibitors hard at work and ultimately pleased with the excellent turn out.
A CREATIVE COMBINATION Blind Vision is growing. A recent collaboration between Blind Vision and Creative Input, a well-established design company, has seen both companies now occupying the premises at 156 Beyers Naude Drive, in Johannesburg. Both Blind Vision and Creative Input now form part of the original creative suite, which boasts a full in-house graphic design studio offering from logo design concepts, business cards and websites, to large format branding such as printed blinds, pull-up banners and billboards.
SOUTHERN AFRICA’S FIRST KORNIT DTG PRINTER INSTALLED AT PI PRINTERS IN JHB Personalised Image Printers, promotional goods and brand specialists in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg, have recently installed Southern Africa’s first Kornit digital printer. The Kornit Thunder 932-6 is an industrial digital inkjet printer designed to meet the high quality, high-speed and low cost printing demands of the Direct To Garment market.
FRANCHISING PREPARES FOR UPSWING WITH INTERNATIONAL FRANCHISE EXPO All eyes will be on South Africa in 2010! This watershed year not only marks the hosting of the FIFA World Cup Soccer, the premier world event, but it will also mark the significant upswing in business and consumer confidence. Whilst all sectors of business have felt the effects of the economic recession, franchising has managed to weather the storm better than independent businesses.
NEW TRADE FAIR DATE FOR VISCOM FRANKFURT Viscom, the International Trade Fair for Visual Communication, will take place from 4 to 6 November in Frankfurt instead of from 28 to 30 October as originally planned. ‘With this change in dates, we want to achieve a better integration into the overall European picture of the viscom trade fairs,’ explains trade fair director Petra Lassahn.
WRAP2THEMAX WINNING ENTRY FOR JANUARY 2010 The winner of the January round of the Wrap2theMax design competition is local TBWA Art Director, Jacquin Botha. Jacquin's unique design for the South African online dating website Dateway.co.za - stood out as it showcased how vinyl can be taken past the purely graphic and could also become the medium. This design makes use of fluorescent vinyl that glows in the dark.

LIMITS ON ADVERTISING AGAINST FREEDOM OF SPEECH – WONSA REPORTS Are government’s encroaching on freedom of speech through legislation to ban or limit certain advertisements? Red lights on this subject is flickering in Spain where marketers will be legally banned from advertising certain beauty products and services, such as plastic surgery, before 22:00 in an effort to stamp out the growing number of eating disorders and improve the mental health of young women fixated on their weight and appearance.

TLC STARTS THE PARTY FOR MALIBU CARIBBEAN RUM TLC, Primedia Unlimited’s washroom advertising specialist, has enabled Pernod Ricard’s Malibu Caribbean Rum to make a very powerful creative statement on washroom Door Wraps. They are situated at 20 university and Technikon campuses around South Africa for three months.
SUPERGA WALKS TALL WITH NEW BRANDED TAXI TOP CAMPAIGN High fashion Italian shoe brand, Superga, recently hit the streets of Durban and Cape Town atop no fewer than 40 metred taxi vehicles. Assisted by vehicle branding specialist Graffiti, Superga's attention-grabbing Taxi Top promotion formed a large part of the trendy canvas shoe brand's summer communications campaign, aimed at targeting the youth holidaying on the some of the country's most popular beach spots.
DARK & LOVELY RENEWS ADVERTISING DEAL WITH WIDEOPEN PLATFORM Continuing its partnership with Primedia Unlimited subsidiary Wideopen Platform, local favourite hair care brand Dark & Lovely has launched its improved Relaxer Kits to women of ethnic origin in metropolitan areas across South Africa. Dark & Lovely has secured Wideopen’s large format outdoor sites in the Johannesburg and Durban CBD’s until the end of December 2010.
AMERICAN EXPRESS® CARDS ON PRIMALL MEDIA According to Primedia Unlimited’s indoor advertising subsidiary Primall Media, mall advertising is an effective medium for altering consumer behaviour and swaying purchase decisions at the most crucial moment, at the point of purchase. Global financial services provider American Express Cards has entrusted Primall Media to capitalise on this positive influence by raising awareness of American Express acceptance in SA through the My life My Card campaign.
TRACTOR BANKS GRAND SPECTACLE ON THE BAY Tractor Outdoor Eastern Cape has erected the largest building wrap in Port Elizabeth on behalf of First National Bank as part of their World Cup 2010 campaign.

NIELSEN STUDY CONFIRMS EFFECTIVENESS OF DIGITAL SIGNAGE AT POINT OF SALE According to a new Nielsen consumer survey, ‘Awareness and Effectiveness of Digital Display Screens Installed in Grocery Stores,’ digital out-of-home media (DOOH) increases sales at the point of sale (POS). Four out of five product brands experienced significant increases of up to 33 percent in additional sales through the use of DOOH media, according to the report.
