SIGN & DIGITAL GRAPHIX ROADSHOW CONCLUDES IN CAPE TOWN The final leg of the Sign & Digital Graphix Roadshow wrapped up in Cape Town this week, taking place on the 5th and 6th May at the CTICC. Despite the bad weather the show was upbeat with over 1150 visitors arriving to see the good cross-section of products and services that were on display. The exhibitors were pleased with the qualified Industry based visitors that arrived from both end-user to manufacturer.
SIGN & DIGITAL GRAPHICS ROADSHOW ATTRACTS HIGH-CALIBRE OF VISITORS IN POLOKWANE Making its first appearance in Limpopo, the Sign & Digital Graphics Roadshow chose the impressive Meropa Casino as its venue for the one-day event held Thursday, 22 April 2010. With a visitor count of 250, the 17 exhibitors complimented the high-calibre of people from what is clearly an established sign and display industry in the previously unexplored province. From the amount of positive feedback, the organisers have agreed that this is definitely an area worth re-visiting in the future.
AVERY GRAPHICS STANDARDISES GLOBAL PRODUCT NOMENCLATURE In an effort to simplify things and make life easier, better and faster, Avery Graphics has gone through a standardising global nomenclature process. As Avery is a global company with offices and manufacturing plants across the world, it became cumbersome to have different product codes for what is essentially the same product.
SOUTH AFRICAN MARKETERS RESPOND TO DEMAND FOR GREEN ADVERTISING As consumers become more eco-conscious, companies will go to ever greater lengths to present themselves as environmentally friendly. As a result, an increased number of local companies are adopting eco-friendly advertising materials, products and methods for their campaigns. This trend is growing locally as well with a significant number of South African companies fast adopting eco-friendly advertising materials, products and methods for their new campaigns.
GRPD MAKES APPLYING FILMS AS SIMPLE AS CHILD’S PLAY The annual International Sign Association (ISA) Sign Expo held in Orlando, Florida in early April is one of the main events of the year for Graphics and Reflective Products (GRPD), who used the successful trade show to display how simple it is to apply their new line of digital and vinyl films.

2010 ISA SIGN DESIGN COMPETITION WINNERS REACH NEW LEVELS OF CREATIVITY The top spots at the International Sign Association’s 2010 Sign Design Competition were taken by three outstanding examples of modern sign design. For the first time, the voting was open to the public and conducted completely online. More than 17,000 votes were cast for more than 60 of ISA members’ 2009 completed projects, segmented in three distinct categories – signage for entertainment venues, restaurants/bars, and specialty retail/boutique shops.
PLANNED LAUNCH OF FIRST AMERICAN BASED FESPA EXHIBITION ANNOUNCED FESPA expects to run the first FESPA Americas in Orlando, Florida, from 24-26 February 2011, alongside Graphics of the Americas, pending final confirmation of an agreement with the Printing Association of Florida.
BRAND EXPOSURE THAT REALLY GETS AROUND With the much anticipated 2010 Soccer World Cup just weeks away, advertising agencies face quite a challenge in maximising their clients’ brand exposure during this once-in-a-lifetime marketing opportunity, working within tight budgets and the constraints imposed by FIFA to protect its sponsors. RIVETING NEW CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE: NOW IN SA 3D mania has gripped the world, with blockbusters such as Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and Up drawing audiences into a vivid, enthralling new cinematic experience. At a recent media event, Avatar director James Cameron confirmed that both in theatres and in purchasing home videos, audiences have been willing to pay more for a premium 3D experience, opening up new worlds of possibilities for film makers and producers.
LG ELECTRONICS ACHIEVES LEVEL 6 BBBEEE CERTIFICATION AND CONFIRMS COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT On the 22 April, 2010, LG Electronics South Africa hosted the official inauguration of its new offices in Germiston, Johannesburg. The function, presided over by the Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Dr Gwen Mahlangu Nkabinde, was held to announce the recently concluded in-depth Black Economic Empowerment programme which sees the company being awarded a Level 6 certification, a first for a company of its kind in South Africa.
ISA INTERNATIONAL SIGN EXPO 2010 EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS FOLLOWING ECONOMIC DOWNTURN The recent ISA International Sign Expo 2010 in Orlando, April 7 – 10 attracted early 17,000 attendees from around the globe who visited hundreds of exhibitors in over 14800 net square metres (160,000sqft) of exhibit space on an expo show floor that was the largest it has been since 2008. Seventeen percent of exhibitors were new and/or first time exhibitors, clearly indicating the sign industry is on the rebound following the recent economic downturn.

TOP TV CHOOSES TOP OUTDOOR WITH WIDEOPEN Newest pay TV operator Top TV, targeting LSMs 5 - 8, has contracted Primedia Unlimited’s large-format outdoor specialist, Wideopen Platform, to generate awareness around its select packages and impressive 55 channel offering.
GUCCI SIGNS ADVERTISING DEAL WITH PRIMALL MEDIA Mall advertising strategically reaches shoppers in ‘the last mile’ before the point of purchase and has the ability to sway purchasing decisions on the spot. P&G Fragrances’ brand Gucci is yet another luxury brand to benefit from the success of mall advertising, having signed a national two-month mall campaign with Primedia Unlimited subsidiary Primall Media, for new extension Flora Eau de Perfume.
WIDEOPEN TAKES CORONATION TO CAPE TOWN DOMESTIC ARRIVALS Financial services provider Coronation has selected Primedia Unlimited subsidiary Wideopen Platform to execute an indoor advertising campaign designed by Fox P2, to reach Cape Town’s young executives and investors. The communication takes centre stage through Wideopen’s new site at the Domestic Arrivals corridor at Cape Town International Airport.
PRIMALL MEDIA SECURES CITROEN’S FIRST MALL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN Primall Media has secured new client Citroen for the brand’s first ever mall advertising campaign. Primall’s shopping centre parkade media will launch the car manufacturer’s new C3 to shoppers across the country for three months. As shopping centres become increasingly busier year on year, making use of Primall’s prominent in-centre media, Citroen is set for maximum exposure to shoppers who may also be in the market for a new car.
SAB SIGNS GROLSCH ADVERTISING TO TLC For the first time South African Breweries has entrusted TLC to promote its premium international lager brand Grolsch, to South African consumers. Having become the title sponsor of Cinema Nouveau, Grolsch’s national washroom campaign aims to create brand awareness amongst the high number of upper LSM cinema-goers who traverse the environments on a monthly basis.
QUEENSPARK COMMITS TO MALL ADVERTISING FOR 2010 Upmarket clothing brand Queenspark has again renewed its advertising contract with Primedia Unlimited subsidiary Primall Media, this time round until the end of 2010. The new partnership commences with Queenspark launching its J Crew Collection to Cape Town’s fashionably informed men and women via Primall’s large format Parkade Billboards at the Cavendish Square Shopping Centre.
ASLAN DFP 46 FILM FOR OUTDOOR FLOOR GRAPHICS Aslan has teamed up the digitally printable ASLAN DFP 46 film with the ASLAN MP 326 laminating film to create a special solution for short-term and medium-term applications. The composite film can be adhered to smooth or rough outdoor surfaces, roads, car parks or paths.
NEW HEXIS PRODUCT CATALOGUE TO ASSIST CUSTOMERS Hexis, the vinyl manufacturer represented in South Africa through Falcon, has released the 2010 issue of their catalogue. Featuring a number of new products, the catalogue is designed to assist customers in choosing the right product for their application and comes redesigned with a fresh new look and feel. The catalogue includes detailed product information such as technical details, applications for each product and recommended tools and laminates to use with each film.
‘COOLEST NEW PRODUCT’ AT ISA 2010 GOES TO DESCOR FROM ULTRAFLEX At this year's ISA show, Ultraflex Systems’ Descor system was a huge hit, winning the ‘Coolest New Product of 2010’ award in the show’s New Product Showcase competition. Descor is a specialty textile for custom interior design and graphics making it ideal for decorative wall and ceiling applications.
REPOSITIONABLE MOUNTING FILM FROM MADICO OFFERS CLEAN REMOVABILITY WITH NO ADHESIVE TRANSFER Madico Graphic Films has extended its line of double-sided optically clear mounting films. Madico’s latest addition, the E-338RC Permanent/Removable Optically Clear Mounting Adhesive, feature’s a permanent adhesive on one side and an ‘easy-peel’ adhesive on the other, bringing new benefits to temporary or short-term graphic applications thanks to the very low adhesion levels.

COOL CUT CAP CREATING A REAL BUZZ IN THE MARKETPLACE The Cool Cut Cap has received excellent feedback from its various promotions. uShaka Marine World used the Cool Cut Cap in their ‘We've dropped it like it's hot’ campaign and were given out to visitors to Water World. The No Nonsense Group designed the Cap using the striking yellow flames, which wrapped around the cap with the branding and campaign slogans on the panels. The kids went wild for them.
MAGIC TOUCH CREATES OUTDOOR VIDEO CUBE – SOUTH AFRICAN FIRST MagicTouch, distributor of projection screens and films, touch foils and digital advertising solutions in South Africa, provided members of the ST Engenas Zion Christian Church in Polokwane, with a unique view of their Easter weekend celebrations. A South African first, MagicTouch used their outdoor video cube to provide a solution that allowed all members to see what was happening on the stage, even when the stage was not directly visible.
COMARK SPHERE SUPPORTS LARGE FORMAT PRINTING AND CARD DISPENSING Comark Corporation, a leading designer and manufacturer of high-performance, ruggedised Kiosks, is pleased to announce the launch of the Sphere™ kiosk. The Sphere is a multifunctional, interactive kiosk, capable of dispensing cards or printing on 20cm x 28cm (8½” x 11”) paper, using an integrated wide-format thermal printer. While the kiosk is capable of supporting large peripherals, it maintains a small footprint, taking up less than 0.185 sqm (two square feet) of floor space.

DISPLAY AT SAFECO FIELD SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. and the Seattle Mariners have announce the deployment of full HD 2m (82") LCD weatherproof Street Display has been installed at Safeco Field, home of the major league baseball team, the Seattle Mariners. Safeco Field, built in 1999 and located in Seattle, Washington, houses the world's second largest open/close roof with natural grass, is the Seattle Mariners home field and hosts more than 2 million fans per year.
CUMEDIN LAUNCHES ARTPLAYER.COM Cumedin has launched ArtPlayer.com, a plug-and-play instore TV and digital signage service. It displays high-resolution fine art images and allows the user to create his own messages, transforming any screen that's connected to an internet-enabled PC into a dynamic infotainment gallery. In contrast to traditional digital signage, which is designed for a retail environment to grab people's attention by displaying dynamic content, ArtPlayer is better suited to quiet surroundings where people stay for longer periods of time such as restaurants, office buildings and libraries.

SUNPOWER COLLABORATION PRODUCES SOLAR-POWERED SIGN FOR NEW CITY HALL SunPower Sign Inc., a specialty design and solar-solutions provider, collaborated with Green City Signs LLC, Green Light Initiative and SignHouse Inc. to produce a solar-powered sign that eliminates the need for large photovoltaic panels and, instead, integrates an amorphous silicon solar film into the sign itself. SunPower Sign’s parent company, Mankato, MN-based Green Energy Concepts Group Inc., provided the film. The sign is for the New City Hall in Greensburg.
